The street is a hunting ground for Demna Gvasalia, who always draws inspiration from the archetypes of people one meets in everyday life.

For Balenciaga’s Summer 2021 Pre-collection, the designer was once again using the street, not only for his inspirations, but also as the catwalk – let’s not forget that it is in the street that are shown and worn the clothes, no matter how luxurious they are.

It was through a video, signed by Walter Stern, published on the web that the Georgian unveiled his collection for Balenciaga. We saw men and women hurtled through the rain-slicked streets of Paris after dark, sunglasses on the nose, to the tune of Sunglasses at Night of the Canadian singer Corey Hart.

Models weared unisex outfits cut in one size, which ‘’will diminish the environmental impact of a gendered production model’’, according to the press notes.

The press release also specified: ‘’93.5% of the plain materials in this collection are either certified sustainable or upcycled. 100% of the print bases have sustainable certifications’’.

The clothes felt more approachable and wearable, with subversiveness and Gvasalia’s wry humor coming through in the styling. Think: jogging worn with an evening top, a sweater thrown over the head as a hood or a bathrobe matching sneakers and jeans with frayed finishes or even the bi-material and bi-color jogging pants paired with an ultra-oversized sleeves shirt.
