Olivier Rousteing is celebrating his first decade at Balmain. As part of his ongoing celebrations – which has included a Channel 4 TV show, a jet-setting fashion show and a 6,000-person music festival – Rousteing has released his latest Pre-Fall 2022 offering.

For this collection which clashes the baroque splendor of Marie-Antoinette with the grunge style associated with Kurt Cobain, Rousteing took inspiration from his mentor and friend Ed Filipowski, the co-founder of PR agency KCD, and from the way grunge has influenced designers at that time.

For Pre-Fall 2022, the “Kurt Cobain-meets-Marie-Antoinette” aesthetic was on full display with pearl-encrusted jackets, bold-shouldered tailoring in houndstooth checks, elegantly destroyed redingotes with intricate lacing details, and sexy motocross jeans with padded knees.

Rousteing is worried about the future generations, their knowledge about magazines, tapes, Kodak’s. “I’m really scared that for a new generation, maybe in one or two decades, you will have to explain what a magazine is. The same way you have to explain Kodak now. Or what a tape is”, said Rousteing. Of it, he doesn’t give answers, but thought-provoking propositions scrawled out on clothes: “Offline, logout, unfollow”, reads one t-shirt, which also bears the hashtag #therealluxury.
