Balmain – Spring/Summer 2021 – Paris Fashion Week

October 4, 2020

Olivier Rousteing opened his Balmain mega show at the Jardin des Plantes where he invited many celebrities, stylists and other ‘’friends of the brand’’, among them J. Lo, Anna Wintour, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Kris Jenner, Usher and Cara Delevingne, who couldn’t travel to sit virtually front row and to ‘’watch’’ the show from screens scattered among the first three rows of the bleachers.

The French designer starred this season the monogram jacquard that the founder used in the Seventies for couture coats, ready-to-wear blouses and travel bags. Here, the monogram, recently relaunched, was employed on high-waisted pants, trenchcoats, capes and suits worn by six famous veteran French models.

Then came out the second part of the collection for Spring/Summer 2021. Think suiting with strong and pointed shoulders, tight pants flaring out over high heels, molded leather bustiers, tight denim knee shorts and sparkly sweaters and jackets sporting two million Swarovski crystals in total, according to the house but also, bike shorts, oversized jackets, tailoring in gray flannel and tuxedo fabrics or knit for men.

And because this is Rousteing’s Balmain – and because the theme for the season is ‘’Optimism’’ – a selection of sparkly, party-ready dresses closed the show.

Perhaps my optimism is a reflection of my own personal history – after all, it was not too long ago that someone like me was never meant to end up in the position that I occupy today
