Ricardo Tisci presented his Burberry Spring/Summer 2022 collection digitally once again – and off-calendar. He dedicated the collection to his beloved mother, who passed away in late August at the age of 93. “We are born from animals. We have an animal instinct that’s highly strung when we are feeling happiness or depression or sadness”, Tisci said from Milan.

“To me, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imaginations: how we dream to come alive. I wanted to move through a series of immersive spaces, each of them unique and unexpected in their sound, texture and experience. It’s that idea of flicking between the endless realities and fantasies we have at our fingertips each day. This is for my mother, Elmerinda, and to a journey full of new possibilities”, he continued.
The collection, dubbed “Animal Instinct”, spotlighted heritage staples and fresh abstract prints. The result was a cacophony of colour, movement, space and time. The timeless classic that is the iconic Burberry trench coat was deconstructed and reinvented with new sophistication, sleeveless outerwear and mini coats were refreshed with youthful energy for a bright Burberry future. Most of the designs contain a hint of bondage-style detailing.
“It’s sexy with elegance – not vulgar – and it was all very instinctive and honest”, the designer said. “I have the security now to deconstruct – and reconstruct”.
Those trenches weren’t the only bits of Burberry he pulled apart.
Tisci also took the stripes from the check pattern – beige, black, white and red – broke them apart, added pink and yellow, and shaped them into graphic animal spot placement prints. They popped on fringed minis, liquid gowns and sweet shirt dresses with streamers.
This season, Burberry introduced their newest bag, the Rhombi, in a ellipse-shape inspired by the tortoiseshell-camouflage color blocking seen on the clothing. The British house also updates the standout Olympia bag in a softer shape in leather and a circular strap.
