Chanel – Spring/Summer 2021 – Paris Fashion Week

For the Chanel’s last show inside the Grand Palais in Paris before it undergoes renovations, Virginie Viard built her own version of the Hollywood sign where giant white letters spelled out Chanel, evoking the iconic Hollywood sign in the Santa Monica mountains.

Viard said she was inspired by celebrities, specifically those which serve as muses to the house – the Parisian house has a century-old relationship with actresses, as the recently opened exhibition ‘’Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto’’ at Paris’s dedicated fashion museum the Palais Galliera revealed.

‘’I was thinking about actresses at the photocall, on the red carpet, that moment when they’re being called to by the photographers: their faces a little distracted, their attitude a little out of sync with the outfits they’re wearing’’, Viard said, in a statement. ‘’And then there are the fans waiting for them behind the barriers, this very lively side to cinema that happens beyond cinema, that’s what I like’’.

The looks were a blend of logo-heavy daywear with an Eighties twist and old-school glamour that leveraged the Chanel codes of streamlined chic.

So, alongside the ecru and black tweed suits, were jeans in fluorescent colors, fluid dresses and t-shirts printed with the letters of Chanel like neon-lights, pale pink capri pants, long dresses printed with little flowers in black and white, or in an ultra-fine tweed, outfits embroidered with sequins, bermuda short suits and layers of asymmetry…
