In lieu of the digital edition of Paris Fashion Week where she shows her collections for decades, Rei Kawakubo presented her Spring/Summer 2021 collection for Comme des Garçons Homme Plus in a mini show at the company’s offices in Tokyo.
Entitled ‘’Metal Outlaw’’, Kawakubo’s collection delivered signs of hope and strength to face the difficulties due to the pandemic fashion and brands face moving forward.
In a release sent out after the show, the designer said she was inspired by the metallic materials that she often uses in her interior designs. ‘’It is my wish that the strength of metal, the strength that wouldn’t yield to any pressure or force, and the strength that will give birth to hope that we need to overcome the various hardships we now face, will all overlap in this collection’’, stated the designer.
This was clear from the start, when models emerged wearing futuristic silver suits, followed by relaxed silver pants held by suspenders with a matching jacket, a padded blazer with a crisp white collar shirt, straight knee-length silver skirts and an array of cut-out jackets with silver inlays. Overall, the collection is playful with silhouettes reminiscent of youthful vibe, but also blends strength and futuristic elements.
