COS, the London-based fashion brand from the H&M Group, has had sustainability in its DNA since its beginning, and for the holiday season the brand partnered with Fair Isle knitwear designer Mati Ventrillon to release a capsule collection.

The collection includes four Fair Isle wool pieces, available for both women and men: three sweaters and a beanie made from high-quality yarns. Each piece, made from responsibly sourced wool, features a pattern designed exclusively for the collection. In doing so, Ventrillon has created a minimalist design that celebrates the tradition of the Fair Isle technique, experimenting and exploring new creative avenues for these patterns whose origins date back to the mid-19th century.

We created a minimalist motif that celebrates the tradition of the Fair Isle technique. We thought it would be interesting to focus on the smaller aspects of the traditional design. These patterns are usually used as fillers between larger motifs or as a border. However, instead of keeping them small we exploded them to become the focus point,” explains the designer who left her career as an architect in London to move to Fair Isle. She has now become one of the few remaining producers of Fair Isle knitwear on the Scottish island that gave its name to this knitting technique.
