American beauty magazine Allure enlisted three top models Fernanda Ly, Fei Fei Sun and Soo Joo Park to star on its June 2018 ‘’All About Hair’’ cover. The models are handpicked by Allure’s editor-in-chief, Michelle Lee, who pinpoints a major part of a larger discussion that she believes should be addressed.
By selecting these barrier-breaking supermodels, Lee is shedding a light on the lack of representation of Asian women on mainstream magazine covers. In her editor’s letter, Lee shared that in the 28-year history of Allure magazine that out of 327 issues, only two Asian women have graced the cover: Lucy Liu in 2000 and Olivia Munn, who’s part Chinese, in 2014.
Photographer Sølve Sundsbø captures animated cover portraits of Fernanda Ly, Fei Fei Sun and Soo Joo Park, styled by Beat Bolliger and all inspiring major hair envy. The top models reflected on their experiences in the industry – both good and bad – and how more steps need to be taken to diversify fashion.
