Appointed in June 2020 as artistic director of Givenchy, Matthew M. Williams will not have had the best conditions to make his first steps in the illustrious Parisian house, the cause: the pandemic of COVID-19 that paused the entire fashion industry for over two years.

This was the designer’s first show dedicated to women, for which he decided to mix the fashion icons of his native America with France, home of the founder of the house Hubert de Givenchy.

Set to a soundtrack of classic songs – including Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” and Noise Addict’s “I Wish I Was Him” – the Spring/Summer 2023 collection, styled by Carine Roitfeld, took place in the Jardin des Plantes.

The collection was a freewheeling mix of denim, slouchy combats, bombers and hoodies with tweed, cardigan-style jackets and romantic blouses. “It’s really this idea of a clash”, said Matthew M. William. There were also nods to founder Hubert de Givenchy’s archival dresses, which the designer revisited in his vision by streamlining them, or executing them in knit or jersey, the fabric of the season.
