For his Spring/Summer 2023 collection for Gucci, dubbed ‘’Twinsburg’’, Alessandro Michele questions the notion of individuality and duality that he believes exists in each of us. As Marianne Faithfull recited on the soundtrack, “We are two totally opposite twins, different and the same”.

I am a son of two mothers: mum Eralda and mum Giuliana (Eralda is his late mother and Giuliana, his late aunt, ed.) Two extraordinary women who made their township the ultimate seal of their existence. They lived in the same body. They dressed and combed their hair in the same way. They were magically mirrored. One multiplied the other. That was my world, perfectly double and doubled”, explained Michele in his show notes.

In true Michele fashion, the collection’s 68 looks made their way through Gucci‘s time-traveling street style, here from the ’80s seen through a “thrift store” lens, with voluminous leather jogging sets, broad-shouldered jumpsuits, ravishing trench coats blasted with vibrant lipstick and tool graphics, oversized jackets with drooping shoulders, workwear-inspired clothing, outfits with international cultural references, and sequined overalls and jackets bearing the word “FUORI“, which means “out” in English, and is also the name of Italy’s first monthly magazine dedicated to the fight for sexual liberation, founded in 1971.

Alongside many accessories that double up in abundance, there were also Gremlins, the furry creatures from the 1984 black comedy that are “a pop reference that can transform and become very evil and naughty, and also multiply”.
