Virgil Abloh presented his second collection as creative director of menswear under luxury French house Louis Vuitton at Jardin des Tuileries during Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019.
The show’s setting was like any other New York City trope that’s often seen in movies: An annoyed resident cracks his window open to shush noisy neighbors; a solo saxophone player performs under a street light; traffic signs and trash cans were strategically strewn about. But what likely captured attendees’ immediate attention was the sound of Michael Jackson’s discography filling the venue before the show, as the legendary pop star served as Abloh’s latest inspiration.
The season unfolds with monochromatic numbers in soft shades of grey. Tailoring is layered as Abloh plays with varying proportions for jackets and coats. Billowing pleated trousers fall in line with elegant elongated shapes. Meanwhile, soft leather is effortlessly draped for chic coats and juxtaposed against the harshness of metallic silver. Military elements, glittery details, and graphics like a pair of shoes directly tie the collection to Jackson. Bringing the range full circle, Abloh celebrates a positive world view with graphics that feature flags from different countries.
