An organic colour palette leads the transition from dawn to dusk, taking in warm orange sunrise hues through to brilliant sky blues and midnight blacks. Looks are tonally coordinated to give these glorious summer colours their moment to shine. Earth tones, such as Tuscan terracotta, putty and red clay, further root the collection in natural colours, while punctuation points of bright red and acid yellow cut through the palette.
Staying with earthly inspirations, the four elements of earth, wind, water and fire are represented in a series of photo prints that mix natural textures with bold colour washes. Announcing the coming of Spring, sunflowers sprout throughout the collection as a repeating print motif, an intarsia knit pattern and as tactile embroidery on key separates including a loose linen suit in rust or cream.
Elevating the central theme of lightness, fabrics have been chosen for their weight and the way they move through the space. Transparent nylons are used to craft whole garments or to add textured layers to linen styles. Design details have been inspired by boat sails, specifically a zigzag stitch pattern, while other practical outdoor clothing elements, such as storm cuffs, have been assimilated and refined. Check fabrics acknowledge Paul Smith’s roots in the world of tailoring, an ever-green theme of the Paul Smith collection.
Photographs of vintage tent fabrics inspire a series of richly coloured seasonal stripes that appear on tops, knitwear and a capsule collection of nylon bags from the renowned Japanese luggage specialists, Porter. This debut collaboration for Spring/Summer 2022 pairs Paul Smith’s supreme eye for stripes with Porter’s unmatched luggage, which ranges from small shoulder bags to weekend duffels.
Adding to the theme of outdoor exploration, footwear is suited to adventures on land and sea: GoreTex trainers provide weather-proof comfort for terrestrial exploration, while deck shoes with suede uppers hint at voyages over the waves. Subtle climbing rope straps are also added to sunglasses.
