Hope and optimism, renewal and rebirth, craftsmanship and tradition. Day one of London Fashion Week saw the striking collection of London-based Emirati menswear label QASIMI, unveiled. The runway show was filmed at St. Ann’s Court, a country estate in Surrey County (South East England) which was considered as one of the finest and most iconic houses to have been built in Britain in the first half of the 20th century by the famous architect Sir Raymond McGrath.

Entitled “Between Ashes and Roses”, after a 20th-century work by the Syrian poet Adunis, the collection was bursting with color reminiscent of the bougainvillea and magnolias in full bloom growing against the backdrop.

Hoor Al-Qasimi, the creative director of QASIMI, paid here a vibrant tribute to the traditional Emirati craft of palm frond weaving known as safeefah, through fringed bags, but also by collaborating with the Sharjah-based Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council – a platform that empowers women artisans and preserves the skills and rich cultural heritage of the UAE.

Many references to Emirati culture punctuated the collection, such as tarboush – or long woven tassels that are staples of an Emirati man’s wardrobe – hung on the front pockets of tailored jackets, decorating many pieces and swaying to the footsteps of the models.

Many of the soft hues and necklines were inspired by the Indian subcontinent, while Islamic architecture served as the reference for graphic elements within the clothing.
