The representation of Medusa, also called Gorgo, changes with the times.
Usually depicted from the front, in the archaic period she had the face of a boar, bulging eyes, fangs, hanging tongue and snakes in her hair or waist. Her features became more human and feminized in the classical age before being reinvented successively during the Renaissance and by painters at the end of the 19th century. From being a monster, Medusa has become the archetype of the femme fatale.
Today, Medusa is an instantly recognizable symbol of the Versace brand, and with it the Italian brand has decided to launch a new line that places the Medusa head front and center.
The collection’s debut sees a selection of accessories and handbags crafted from soft premium leather, each completed with a Medusa plaque – the same plaque that was discovered on the doors of Via Gesù 12: Versace’s first headquarters in Milan.
La Medusa handbags exude positivity through a range of bold shades, but there’s one color that truly defines the line: the DV Blue, inspired by nature and designed to bring happiness to the wearer.
Blue is my favourite colour because for me it represents freedom. When I am in the sea, I feel free. When I’m surrounded by elements of nature and clear blue skies, I feel truly happy and all that is wrong in the world disappears. The world becomes blue.
