Like Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, Walter Van Beirendonck got inspired by the resourcefulness of the French couturiers of the 1940s by presenting all his designs on miniature mannequins that travelled the world in 1945, called the ‘’Théâtre de la Mode’’.
The Walter Van Beirendonck Spring/Summer 2021 collection – it was called ‘’Mirror’’, which brought to mind mirrors used in shaman rituals and seen by the designer like a ‘’kind of an entrance to a new world’’, – included 22 looks presented on dolls created by former student Eli Effenberger in Tokyo.
As usual, the collection was bold and eccentric with its mirrors in different shapes and sizes bolstered up silhouettes and its colour and print-palettes inspired from the ghost-like figures on paintings by Swiss artist Miriam Cahn.
