As a keen reader, Wooyoungmi’s founder, South Korean designer Woo Young Mi, was inspired by “A Gentleman in Moscow”, the novel by Amor Towles, published in 2018, in which Count Alexander Illich Rostov, an unrepentant Russian aristocrat, finds himself under house arrest at the Metropol Moscow Hotel in the early 1920s, where he meets all sorts of characters, from waiters to foreign diplomats passing through Moscow to Nina, a nine-year-old girl, who will upset the course of his well-ordered life at the Metropol.

I liked the way this man found humanity and elegance, and then the energy to keep this attitude his whole life“, she said.

The Wooyoungmi’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection plays with layering, stacking thin layers on top of each other so as not to create heaviness in thickness, while loose-fitting pants and jeans are often tucked into boots for a puffy effect, ready for the cold weather.

The designer doesn’t forget tailoring, however, with short, broad-shouldered suit jackets in the label’s signature square shape that have subtle, clever details like tabs to keep jackets closed while still open.

The palette, meanwhile, is influenced by the shots of photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky, one of the first to capture 20th century Russia in color, with gradations of blue, yellow or orange, cameos of pinks, reds and browns, as well as beiges and water greens that meet black and white.
