Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, steered by the impeccable vision of Matthieu Blazy, tells a story of global exploration and the joy of the journey. The iconic brand ventures far from its traditional Italian roots, embracing a diverse array of worldwide influences under Blazy’s imaginative touch.

Stepping into the show space, attendees were met with a vivid blue ceramic tile floor. This vast expanse bore a naively drawn map of the world, populated with various creatures, including the whimsical addition of Blazy‘s pet dog. This lively backdrop acted as a metaphorical bridge, connecting the audience to Blazy’s global inspirations.

The initial reveal from the collection was a retro-styled one-piece bathing suit paired with an ingenious leather bag designed to mimic straw intrecciato. This was clearly not just another typical destination ensemble. Instead, Blazy’s ambitious vision encompassed global inspirations from South America to Southeast Asia, Brittany to Sicily. These myriad influences amalgamated into a fresh, intriguing culture through the garments.

Blazy’s notable departure from the brand’s quintessential ready-to-wear codes showcased his adeptness and flexibility. This collection prominently featured pieces like leather-wrapped ponchos, salt-and-pepper textured coats, and crocheted raffia dresses adorned with oversized pompoms. Such intricate detailing left attendees yearning for a detailed guide to fully comprehend the craftsmanship of each piece.

The richness of the Earth’s natural wonders found its way into Bottega Veneta‘s creations, with items like a delicate yellow sundress adorned with natural pearls and sandals designed to resemble the texture of banana leaves.

Indeed, it was this profound respect for global artistry and natural beauty that radiated through the collection. Blazy tactfully threaded the line of global inspiration, ensuring he celebrated rather than appropriated. He asserted that the world’s cultural, artistic, and craft treasures are universal treasures, meriting appreciation.

From the fringed leather tops evoking cacti to the dresses reminding one of colorful birds, nature was at the heart of this collection. The narrative encompassed varied personas – the sailor, the nomad, the business commuter, each telling a tale of travel and transformation.

However, amidst all the grandeur and innovation, some elements did seem overwhelming for a spring collection. Leather-constructed outfits mimicking tweed or fur seemed weighty, and the explosion of raffia on some dresses felt disproportionate.
