If Matthew M. Williams’ runway shows for Givenchy look like big concerts, his pre-collections are more refined, stripped down to their core. This elegant Cruise 2023 (Resort 2023) collection for women is more feminine than usual. The women’s opening look was a literal example: a finely knit black stretch suit with flared trousers that created a languid silhouette, worn with just a bra. Minimalist, austere but oh so sexy!
For this effort, Williams said he was mostly referencing house icons of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and a bit draping from 1980s, digging into the archives in search of archetypes.
This aesthetic was also reflected in clean-cut leather blazers and jackets, polished workwear skirts, advanced baggy jeans and cultured cargo trousers.
