Max Mara‘s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, presented by the ever-inventive Ian Griffiths, offered a masterclass in sophisticated elegance, drawing inspiration from the iconic French writer Colette. Stepping away from the brand’s signature camel tones, Griffiths embraced a palette of deep blues, grays, and blacks, imbuing the collection with a sense of quiet confidence and timeless allure.

The silhouettes evoked the bygone eras of the 1910s and 1920s, featuring sinuous curves, drop waists, and full, kimono-like sleeves that whispered of the Belle Époque. Griffiths cast a discerning eye, selecting veteran models like Guinevere van Seenus, Gemma Ward, and Natasha Poly, to embody the collection’s message of self-assured femininity.

Colette’s influence permeated the collection, resonating with her “spareness and economy” of writing, which Griffiths saw reflected in the clean lines and uncluttered designs of Max Mara. This translated into elegant coats with blousing backs and low buttoning, pants cinched with tie-waists, and wrap skirts that exuded a subtle sensuality.

Knitwear emerged as a key player, with the opening look featuring a long, enveloping navy coat followed by a series of cocooning sweaters and outerwear pieces that offered the warmth and comfort of an oversized cardigan.

A touch of whimsy emerged from Griffiths’ graduate collection, with the designer revisiting his earlier inspiration and reinterpreting the full sleeves on coats, tops, and sweaters for the Fall/Winter 2024 collection. “One of the joys about fashion is that we can revisit inspiration,” he enthused, “and when we revisit it, it comes back totally different. It evolves.”

Max Mara’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection resonated with a sense of quiet confidence and timeless elegance. Inspired by the literary icon Colette, the collection celebrated self-assured femininity and offered a sophisticated interpretation of bygone eras, proving once again that Max Mara remains a leader in timeless design.
