Since the COVID-19 pandemic prevents Sacai from showing its collection in Paris, for Spring/Summer 2022 Chitose Abe opted for a video in one of the most iconic locations in Tokyo: at the base of Tokyo Tower, an orange and white radio tower modeled after the Eiffel Tower and completed in 1958. Models stepped off the Sacai-branded bus and walked around the base of the tower, as well as across its observation decks.

For this season, Abe kicked up her experimentations a notch, designing many of the pieces in her new collection as two-in-ones. She described her new hybrid pieces as “skillful yet wearable”.
A long-line tailored vest became an asymmetric mini skirt when the shoulders were released to hang down at the sides, and sheer blouses were given additional volume with detachable sleeve pieces in contrasting satin.
Abe has long loved the interplay of dualities: masculine and feminine, workwear and fancy dress. This season, she put that give-and-take approach in her customers’ own hands. Some pieces came with detachable puffed shoulders; on or off, they change the attitude of the garments in question.
