The designer invited celebrities and influencers to his show that took place inside Los Angeles’ Chinatown Central Plaza, spotlighting local Asian-owned eateries and retailers. Guests could sip boba tea, snack on dim sum, or purchase commemorative Alexander Wang merchandise, benefiting “the Los Angeles Chinatown corporation’s maintenance and preservation of the historic Chinatown central plaza”.
“Fortune City” was the name of the 51-look presentation, featuring Pre-Fall and Fall/Winter 2022. To the brand’s credit, the show’s casting sent a diverse set of models down the runway. And former Victoria’s Secret models Candice Swanepoel and a pregnant Adriana Lima, as well as Korean-American top model Soo Joo Park and American model Amelia Gray Hamlin added to the star power on the runway. The clothes, too, were familiar: very much a continuation of the denim, leather and party-frock fare that has always been the foundation of the label. featured a lot of denim and leather, from oversized gilets worn low on the hips and paired with micro bra-tops. Boots were crotch-high, shorts were tiny and suiting was deconstructed.
Knitwear was presented as shapewear, with heavy wools made into bike shorts and shrugs. Then came the mini bodycon dresses in ruffled smocked Lycra, juxtaposed with the hard leather boots (in black and metallic silver). A very pregnant Adriana Lima got the loudest cheers of the night when she strutted out in an all-black version made with a massive belly cut-out.
