“I always felt like there was space for [men] in this woman’s world that I’d created”, confessed said Erdem Moralioğlu, the founder of the brand. Months of lockdown gave Moralioğlu ample time to dream up his man, which he describes as a brother to the Erdem woman. “The brother that kind of steals her sweaters and other pieces of her clothing and adopts them for himself”, he said. Before continuing: “I always felt so much of the world I was creating for women could be applicable to a man. It was just an inevitable thing. And that quietness of the pandemic allowed a moment to focus, to really think about who my man is, what he’s about, his relationship to my woman”.
To create classics of the Erdem man’s wardrobe, Moralioğlu was inspired by the dress uniform in the movies of the late British filmmaker and actor Derek Jarman, as well as by the works and sketchbooks of British watercolor painter Patrick Procktor.
The collection is unmistakably Erdem, with lots of rich cashmere knits in jewel tone colors, mohair sweaters with thick stripes, sharply tailored jackets with fabric-covered buttons, chinos, flowery cropped shorts, and rich pants in Corduroy or elegantly tailored worn with color-matched tuxedo belts.
Floral prints, recalling Jarman’s cottage garden and Procktor’s nature paintings in Morocco, Corfu and Egypt adorn many pieces.
