Alessandro Michele loves cinema – his mother was a movie buff and an assistant in a production company, she encouraged his love of old Hollywood – and he chose the iconic and unique Hollywood Boulevard for Gucci’s return to the runway since February 2020.

Mum worked in the film industry as an assistant in a production company”, recalls Michele in the show notes. “I remember all the stories she told me, and the details and the sparkles, about that dream factory. There was the alabaster paleness of Marilyn Monroe and her diaphanous voice. There were the black satin gloves of Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake’s velvet hair, as well as the bewitching allure of Rock Hudson and Kim Novak’s dizzying transformative power. Everything felt like a fairy tale”.

Gucci shut down Hollywood Boulevard Tuesday night and used the Walk of Fame for a runway of cinematic scale, showing more than 100 looks.

There, in the front row, was Gwyneth Paltrow, wearing an updated version of the Tom Ford-designed red velvet Gucci tux she sported circa 1996. And there, on the runway, were a dozen celebrity “friends of Gucci”, including Macaulay Culkin, Miranda July, Jodie Turner-Smith, Jared Leto, who has his own starring role in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci set to release later this month, and Salma Hayek Pinault who is married to François-Henri Pinault, the chief executive of Kering, which owns real Gucci. The backdrop was the iconic Chinese Theater and Hollywood Boulevard itself – “that temple of the gods”, Michele called it.

From haute glamour-puss gowns, 1940s-meets-1970s tailoring, and multicolored lace tuxes fastened with floppy fabric corsages, to casual Gucci “souvenir” shirts, floral boiler suits, racy Gucci logo leggings and catsuits, tourist-inspired Hawaiian style shirts, and wide-brimmed cowboy hats smacked of John Wayne and paired with athleisure jackets fit for a sightseer, his collection for Gucci was a true homage to Old Hollywood, to the golden era of film and television.
