Imagine the vibrant chaos of Shibuya after a downpour. Neon signs bleed onto glistening streets, taxis become chrome comets, and pedestrians transform into umbrella-wielding impressionist paintings. This evocative tableau served as the inspiration for Onitsuka Tiger‘s Fall/Winter 2024 collection, unveiled at Milan Fashion Week with a mesmerizing dance performance by the Avantgardey crew.

Creative director Andrea Pompilio masterfully captured the energy of Tokyo’s rainy season, weaving it into a collection that’s both practical and playful. Oversized, cocoon-like wool coats, seemingly drenched in water, cascaded down the runway, juxtaposed with fluid, bias-cut dresses adorned with glistening, puddle-hued sequins.

The collection echoed the ongoing “indoor-outdoor” dialogue in fashion, seamlessly blending tailored elements with sporty flair. Sharp pinstriped office skirt suits opened the show, layered under long topcoats. Running sets peeked out from beneath the outerwear, while polar fleece pieces transformed from cozy layers to statement outerwear in their own right. Sneakers evolved into sporty rockabilly creepers and hiking boots met derby shoes in unexpected yet stylish unions.

A demure palette of mud, rusty brown, and gunmetal gray provided a sophisticated base, punctuated by pops of Onitsuka Tiger’s signature yellow. Lime green rib-knit vests paired with workwear pants and chartreuse duffle coats injected bursts of vibrancy, echoing the neon glow of Shibuya’s nightlife.

Pompilio’s ambition goes beyond mere aesthetics. He seeks to redefine Onitsuka Tiger’s image, bridging its athletic heritage with his own signature style – one that deftly manipulates fabrics and silhouettes to create a youthful, yet sophisticated, vision. As Pompilio himself says, “It’s about finding beauty in the everyday, the unexpected, the in-between.”
