Vivienne Westwood Fall/Winter 2023

March 17, 2023

The fashion world was left in mourning when the legendary designer, Vivienne Westwood, passed away. However, her spirit lives on through the creativity and vivacity of her latest collection. As her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, paid tribute to her life and work in a Paris show, the design team behind the London-based label decided to focus on the brand’s rich archives, infusing a nomadic essence into the latest collection.

The Fall/Winter 2023 collection was a captivating story woven from the threads of Westwood’s legacy, bringing together a medley of distinct eras and influences. The central theme of a wandering traveler collecting elements from various eras was brought to life through a delightful blend of textures, silhouettes, and references to past seasons.

One example of this was a checkered fabric from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which was transformed into a contemporary style, featuring a rounded shoulder suit. Another piece that paid homage to Westwood’s eclectic past was a distressed taupe jumper, which displayed a monkey motif from the Spring/Summer 1993 collection. The iconic off-kilter drunken tailor shape was also incorporated into tailored separates for both men and women, showcasing the designer’s unique touch.

The corset, another enduring Westwood hallmark, was reintroduced with a modern twist. Kronthaler’s ‘Sunday corset‘ featured a bodice beneath a soft, draped exterior, harkening back to the Fall/Winter 1990 “Portrait” collection. Leopard print made a bold appearance on button-up shirts, thigh-skimming dresses, and a cozy teddy coat crafted from woven wool, reminiscent of the Fall/Winter 1991 “Dressing Up” collection.

The Vivienne Westwood Fall/Winter 2023 collection serves as a testament to the designer’s enduring influence within the fashion world. Her legacy lives on, and devotees of the brand can take solace in the knowledge that their beloved styles will continue to be reimagined, modernized, and celebrated for generations to come.
