Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2022

For their Viktor & Rolf Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture collection, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren rejected the paralyzing nature of fear, drawing inspiration from the iconic Dracula cape for a series of surreal evening gowns.

Dracula is such a powerful symbol of the fear of change in society. In Old Hollywood movies you have the archetypal scary image of the person in the doorway. This made us think of a shoulder line that we developed almost 30 years ago, in our very, very first collection for the contest in Hyères in 1993”, Rolf Snoeren explained to Vogue.

The ‘’Surreal Shoulder’’ collection, that uses emotion of fear creatively, was inspired by the Old Hollywood Dracula movies and their dramatic effects of light and shadow that create a feeling of suspense.

The golden age of film was alluded to in the color palette, heavy on black and white, save for sophisticated hues of lilacs, brown and yellow or a floral print that the duo muted with a layer of dark tulle.

With embellishments pared back, save for a handful of upcycled fabric flowers scattered on a few looks, the focus was squarely on the cuts: dresses, shirts and suiting with extreme raised shoulders.
